remaining traditional nomadic people of Africa, and the Goba tribe of
Zambia. The photographs capture cultures in transition, a collision of
traditional, western, and missionary influences.
Dana Gluckstein is a museum-collected photographer, with works in
the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Gluckstein is known for her
ability to infuse essential dignity into a portrait, in a field in which
indigenous people are often exploited and objectified for their
“exoticism”. Gluckstein’s images reinvest portraiture with soul.

Dear Friends,
We want you to know about important news that could affect the future of the five million South Africans suffering from HIV/AIDS. We are deeply dismayed that last Wednesday, August 8, South African President Thabo Mbeki dismissed Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. The former Deputy Health Minister has been a champion in the fight against HIV/AIDS. She led the development of the HIV/AIDS National Strategic Plan, called for South Africans to get tested and treated with ARVs when necessary, and repaired and strengthened the South African government’s ties to national and international civil society groups dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
One of ANSA’s closest allies in South Africa, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) stated, "This is a dreadful error of judgment that will harm public health care and especially the response to the HIV epidemic."
In response to President Mbeki’s decision, ANSA is urging our constituency to take a moment to sign a petition created by Friends of Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge in support of the former Deputy Health Minister.
Please click here to sign the petition. Your signature will add an international presence to the strong public support for the former Deputy Health Minister and call attention to the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa. (Please note, this petition is not led or managed by ANSA and you may want to opt out of the Care2.com site’s automatic email updates, located on the right hand side of the petition.)

South Africa: Fury Over Mbeki's Axing of Madlala-Routledge
By Linda Ensor, Cape Town
A world expert on HIV/Aids echoed the shock and outrage of civil society and political parties towards President Thabo Mbeki's axing of Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge yesterday, saying it represented a severe setback to the fight against HIV/Aids.
Madlala-Routledge, who with Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka spearheaded the development of the HIV/Aids national strategic plan, is due to hold a no-holds barred press conference in Cape Town today to tell her side of the story about her dismissal which took immediate effect on Wednesday evening.
Presidential spokesman Mukoni Ratshitanga said Mbeki would appoint a new deputy "in due course", adding that no president in the world was obliged to give reasons for cabinet appointments and dismissals.
Former United Nations special envoy for Aids in Africa Stephen Lewis said Madlala-Routledge's dismissal was a "dreadful setback in the struggle against the pandemic, a blow to those fighting it internally and a blow to those outside watching developments inside SA. The government of SA seems determined to discredit itself in the eyes of the world.
"Everyone will be shocked by what has happened. We assumed that the turnaround experienced at the end of 2006 signified a real change in heart but obviously with the reemergence of the health minister means we are going in reverse again," Lewis said.
Condemnations of the dismissal came from the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party, Independent Democrats, South African Communist Party and Young Communist League (YCL).
Procedural reasons cited for axing the deputy minister included her unannounced visit to Frere Hospital in Eastern Cape following reports of its exceptionally high infant mortality rate.
The deputy minister said the hospital crisis was a "national emergency". This contradicted statements by Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who tried to downplay the situation.
Also contentious was Madlala-Routledge's trip to Spain to attend an international conference on an Aids vaccine for which Mbeki apparently withdrew his permission at the last minute.
However, government critics believed the main reason for her removal was her outspoken views on HIV/Aids, which clashed with those of Mbeki and Tshabalala-Msimang. The procedural slip-ups had simply been a flimsy pretext or, even worse, an orchestrated attempt to get rid of her, they claimed.
There were suggestions within the government that Madlala-Routledge had a past of misconduct which justified her axing.
TAC chairman Zackie Achmat described the dismissal as a "deep tragedy" and a step backwards for the HIV/Aids programme which was already stalling in key areas such as the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, the change in medicines guidelines and the work on tuberculosis.
"There is no question the minister of health and her director-general are the strongest movers behind this sacking."
Achmat said the dismissal showed a deep intolerance of different views in the ruling party.
TAC called on Mbeki to reconsider his decision.
It said Madlala-Routledge had helped improve the image of the government by counter-balancing Mbeki's denialism. She had also helped mend government's relationship with civil society.
Cosatu said the dismissal would jeopardise the progress made in the fight against HIV/Aids. The YCL said it was a sign of official intolerance of critical and dissenting views.
DA health spokesman Mike Waters described the dismissal as a "disastrous blow" for the war on Aids. Mbeki had allowed his personal loyalty to Tshabalala-Msimang "to triumph over the evidence of her reign of controversy and conflict".
Political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi said while Madlala-Routledge was correct to articulate her stance on HIV/Aids, she was naive to think her position was powerful enough to sustain it.
He did not think she had a sufficiently strong support base within the ruling party for her axing to make waves.
"To the extent there is a storm over her axing, it is something that will pass quickly because of her lack of political influence."

The Keiskamma Altarpiece is a present-day folk-art masterpiece from South Africa, created by over one hundred rural women artists whose lives are deeply impacted by HIV/AIDS, poverty, and other significant hardships, as a message of hope for their community, country, and the larger world. The Altarpiece is a progressive adaptation of a classical religious work that replaces traditional religious iconography with images of black women and vulnerable children who are the "saints" in their community's struggle against AIDS.
The colossal Keiskamma Altarpiece uses embroidery, beadwork, wire sculpture, and photographs. It measures 13 feet high by 22 feet long and is composed of a series of hinged panels that utilize the imagery of the Xhosa people of the Eastern Cape to depict life and the impact of AIDS in the region. Fully opened, the altarpiece reveals dramatic, life-size photographs of three local grandmothers and their grandchildren, some orphaned by AIDS, and the community's hope for the future.
Dr. Carol Hofmeyr became Hamburg's first and only AIDS doctor in 2002. She and her husband have since built an AIDS hospice and treatment center in Hamburg. They have also launched a community-wide effort to encourage everyone to get HIV tests to prevent new infections, and to get those who are infected into treatment. Dr. Hofmeyr also holds a degree in fine arts as well as medicine. She has involved the local women of her adopted community in a series of projects that use art as a means of commemorating the lives lost to AIDS and of consoling those who remain behind. One of these projects became the Keiskamma Altarpiece. It will be a great honor to have her with us on the first day that the Altarpiece is on display in our church.
Co-sponsored by Artists for a New South Africa, UCLA Fowler Museum, Santa Monica FUMC, First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Saint Augustine by the Sea Episcopal, St. Monica Catholic Church and Santa Monica Synagogue.
Free parking is available across from the church on 11th Street.
Los Angeles Keiskamma Altarpiece Tour
December 2006 – April 2007

We're excited to announce the arrival of the famed Keiskamma Altarpiece in Los Angeles, where it will serve as the backdrop to a bold series of HIV/AIDS programs in local churches and community centers. ANSA, in conjunction with UCLA AIDS Institute and Make Art Stop AIDS is steering this magnificent work of art through LA in an effort to channel its important messages of struggle, hope, and unity into the hearts and minds of those who see it and using it as a springboard into action in the fight against HIV/AIDS here and abroad.

This breathtaking, powerful art piece is socially relevant on many levels. It depicts the immense human cost of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the dignity and power with which people and communities in South Africa are working to overcome this challenge, while also symbolizing the inclusive leadership that faith communities can provide in the fight against HIV/AIDS and in combating the stigma and isolation surrounding the disease.
We invite you to join us for the Keiskamma’s inspirational tour through the Los Angeles community.

African Voices Cinema Series
Artists for a New South Africa is proud to be a Community Supporter of the African Voices Cinema Series at AFI FEST 2006 presented by Audi. African Voices is designed to amplify the diverse voices of the African continent through the creative work of directors, producers and writers from the African Diaspora, who were also born in Africa, and who play the ultimate role in communicating the culture, politics, and the vision of a people through film.
With the induction of African Voices, AFI FEST intends to build on its 20 year legacy of presenting international cinema to the international film community. It is our aim to create an opportunity for African filmmakers to present their work on a global scale, while providing African filmmakers with access to industry resources in a structured environment. Additionally, it is their hope that providing such a platform will serve as a vehicle to introduce the American film community to the wealth of Africa’s emerging and untapped creative talent while simultaneously providing a voice to the issues and challenges of Africa’s developing regions.
This year’s festival will showcase the work of six films that represent African directors, producers, and writers from Algeria, Britain, Egypt, France, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.

"I feel like if a person is listening to my story, that person is
with me everyday. Every time she hears the dog bark, it's like she
is waking up in my yard. I've taken that person to South Africa, into
my shack, into my township, into my everyday routine."
-Thembi Ngubane
Friends of Treatment Action Campaign, Artists for a New South Africa,
Radio Diaries, and James S. Coleman African Studies Center invite
you to join Roma Maffia and Jurnee Smollett for a very special evening
with Thembi Ngubane. Come listen to Thembi tell her story and hear
excerpts from her radio diary, Thembi's AIDS Diary: A Year in the
Life of a South African Teenager. Following the event will be a reception
and art exhibit, featuring artwork about HIV/AIDS created and donated
by UCLA students. All proceeds from the art benefit Friends of the
Treatment Action Campaign.
Thembi Ngubane is 19 and lives in the South African
township of Khayelitsha. For the past year she has recorded an audio
diary of her struggle to live with AIDS that will air on NPR. With
poetic insight and humor, Thembi has captured the small moments that
help tell a larger story: telling her father that she has AIDS; visiting
the township clinic to apply for life-saving drugs; being ostracized
by neighbors and friends as they slowly learn her status; quiet, late-night
dancing at home with her boyfriend.
This event is co-sponsored by Polaris Project, Student Coalition for
Marriage Equality, UNICEF, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance,
Office of Residential Life, LGBT Resource Center, The Clothesline
Project, Queer Alliance, Darfur Action Committee, queerXgirl, and

Ahmed "Kathy" Kathrada
played a pivotal role in ending apartheid, building a new democracy,
and achieving reconciliation in South Africa. One of the earliest
advocates of a multiracial movement to fight apartheid, in 1964, he
was convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment, along
with Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu. Fellow prisoners for 26 years,
these men were also the closest colleagues and friends, sharing the
unshakable belief that truth, justice, and democracy would ultimately
triumph over oppression and racism.
Released from prison in 1989, at the age of 60, Mr. Kathrada was at
the center of dramatic changes in South Africa and went on to serve
as a member of South Africa's first freely elected Parliament, Parliamentary
Counsellor to the Office of President Mandela, and Chair of the Robben
Island Museum. His latest book, Memoirs, affords a rare glimpse
into his and other activists' lives during the years of struggle and
imprisonment and sketches poignant cameos of those who became South
Africa's post-apartheid leaders.
| "Ahmed
Kathrada has been so much part of my life over such a long period
that it is inconceivable that I could allow him to write his
memoirs without me contributing something, even if only through
a brief foreword. Our stories have become so interwoven that
the telling of one without the voice of the other being heard
somewhere would have led to an incomplete narrative." |

Vusi Mahlasela performs live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on
NBC
Check your local listings for times.
Vusi
was born in 1965 and grew up in Mamelodi township, where he still
resides. Vusi taught himself to play on a homemade guitar, made of
tin cans and fishing line. By the age of seventeen, he was a seasoned
performer who began to write his own music and lyrics.
From the outset, Vusi's songs addressed themes of political and social
significance, which made him in demand at political rallies and cultural
events. His first record, "When You Come Back," is widely acknowledged
as a South African classic. In 1994, Vusi performed at the inauguration
of South Africa's new president, Nelson Mandela. That same year, Vusi
released his second album, "Wisdom of Forgiveness," for which he received
a nomination for Best Male Vocalist at the South African Music Awards
(SAMA). Vusi has released three albums since "Wisdom," including the
Gold-certified and double SAMA-winning "Silang Mabele."
Vusi is featured in Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony,
the celebrated film about the importance of music and song in South
Africa's anti-apartheid struggle. The "Amandla!" companion album,
which spans forty years of South African music, was released on ATO
Records and features four songs by Vusi. In a rave Los Angeles Times
review of the soundtrack, Robert Hilburn says, "Vusi Mahlasela's voice
is so pure and commanding."
Vusi is currently featured on the soundtrack of Tsotsi, Oscar
Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film from South Africa. An accomplished
guitarist, percussionist, composer, arranger, band leader and performer,
Vusi now enjoys an ever-growing worldwide following.

Deconstructing Apartheid: The Photographs of
Peter Magubane
October 7, 2004 - May 28, 2005
California African American Museum
600 State Drive in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA
Internationally
recognized photojournalist, Peter Magubane is a social realist, who
has documented the plight of oppressed people in South Africa, the
egregious practices of apartheid and indigenous cultures of the region.
His images, captured often at great personal cost, spotlighted the
government’s callous implementation of its racist policies and were
instrumental in turning international indifference into concern and
opposition.
In this new exhibition, curated by Dr. Paul Von Blum, senior lecturer
in African American Studies at UCLA, 88 photographs and artifacts
document Magubane’s examination of the development and implementation
of government sanctioned injustice in South Africa. The exhibit commemorates
the 10th anniversary of the end of apartheid in South Africa.

ANSA RECEIVES 2005 DEFENDER OF DEMOCRACY AWARD
FROM PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY FOUNDATION
People for the American Way Foundation (PFAWF) presented Artists for
a New South Africa (ANSA) with its 2005 Defender of Democracy Award
on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at their annual awards dinner at the Plaza
Hotel in New York City.
The award
was given in recognition of ANSA's ongoing work on Election
Protection (EP) a comprehensive, national effort to protect voting
rights, which is founded and spearheaded by PFWAF and enacted by a
coalition of over 70 civil and voting rights groups across the U.S.
ANSA Co-Founder Robert Guillaume, Co-Founder and Board Chair Donna
Brown Guillaume, Board Members Bradley Silver and Michael Jensen,
as well as supporters Gloria Reuben and Jurnee Smollett all attended
on behalf of ANSA. Academy Award-nominated actress, activist and long-time
ANSA supporter Cicely Tyson graciously presented the award to Donna
Brown Guillaume and ANSA's Executive Director Sharon Gelman.
ANSA is proud to be a member of the EP coalition and to receive this
prestigious award. We accept this honor on behalf of all of the organizations,
activists, artists, and volunteers who have given their time and talents
to protect the voting rights of all Americans.
Through our collective efforts, EP has enabled millions of voters
to cast their ballots. Over 200,000 people, who had problems registering
or voting, called the EP hotline to get free legal assistance and
over 3 million visited the EP website to find their polling place
and get other information.
Staplers of the Stars
Online auction featuring autographed stapler from Samuel L. Jackson
November 16, 2004 through December 6, 2004
Long-time ANSA supporter Samuel L. Jackson participated
in the Staplers of the Stars online auction, a collection of celebrity
staplers that were auctioned for charity. Mr. Jackson designated ANSA
as his chosen charity and we received 100% of the proceeds from the
sale of his stapler. After three weeks of competitive bidding, Mr.
Jackson's stapler sold for $505, making it among the top earners of
the auction.
Respectfully labeled as one of the hardest working actors in Hollywood,
Mr. Jackson is an undisputed star. He made an indelible mark on American
cinema with his portrayal of 'Jules', the philosophizing hitman, in
Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. In addition to unanimous critical
acclaim for his performance, he received Academy Award and Golden
Globe nominations as Best Supporting Actor as well as a Best Supporting
Actor award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Mr. Jackson appears in several films which will be released in 2005XXX2,
The Incredibles, Coach Carter, The Man, In My Country, and the
much anticipated final episode of the trilogy, Star Wars: Episode
III Revenge of the Sith. His extensive film credits also include:
S.W.A.T., Changing Lanes, Formula 51, Shaft, Eve's Bayou, Rules
of Engagement, The Negotiator, The Red Violin, Die Hard with a Vengence,
A Time To Kill, and Do The Right Thing.

Nothing But The Truth
September 18 - November 7, 2004
Los Angeles, CA
"A deeply felt portrait that delicately weaves the extraordinary and
the ordinary in its characters' lives." The New York Times
"This is the story of today's South Africa, as the nation tries to
redress the past without poisoning the future." -Los Angeles Times
"A perceptive and thought-provoking evening of theater, full of wit,
wisdom, verbal poetry, understanding-and ultimately compassion." -The
Hollywood Reporter
Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA) was honored to be involved in
the Mark Taper Forum's production of Nothing But The Truth,
written by and starring John Kani (Tony award-winning South African
actor and artistic director of Johannesburg's world renowned Market
Theatr) and co-staring Esmerelda Bihl and Warona Seane. The play is
a searing exploration of the complex dynamic between those blacks
that remained in South Africa and risked their lives in the struggle
against apartheid and those who returned to a free South Africa after
living in exile.
ANSA was honored to co-sponsor, with the Taper, post-performance discussions
on Tuesday nights with John Kani and his co-stars. We also invited
our supporters to the West Coast premiere of Nothing But The Truth,
at the Mark Taper Forum on September 29, 2004. This special evening
included a Golden Circle fundraiser which benefited ANSA.
As a part of the event, there was a lively discussion following the
play with John Kani, Esmeralda Bihl and Warona Seane. ANSA Executive
Director Sharon Gelman was invited to open the discussion by speaking
to the audience about South Africa's process of Truth and Reconiliation
and about ANSA's work to fight AIDS in South Africa. ANSA guests joined
the actors for an ANSA reception at Kendall's Brassiere.
A majority of the proceeds benefited ANSA's ongoing programs, and
the cost of the tickets benefitted the Center Theatre Group, which
has been responsible for much of the excellent theatre that has come
out of and to Los Angeles in the past 37 years.
